How To Stop Smoking With Vaping

Although smokers are aware of the dangers of smoking, leaving cigarettes behind is extremely difficult.

However, recently, a brand new study published by Cochrane, an international charitable organization with a network of scientists, researchers, and health care professionals from around the world. They discovered that vaping could be more effective than traditional nicotine replacement therapy (which includes nicotine gum nicotine patches, and nicotine lozenges) when it comes to quitting smoking. So if you’re asking yourself, “can I quit smoking by vaping” the answer is yes.

But, what exactly makes vaping better for quitting cigarettes, and how can you use vaping to leave the nasty habit of smoking behind? Read on to find out.

Why are Cigarettes so Hard to Quit?

Cigarettes are hard to quit because of nicotine. Nicotine is the active ingredient in tobacco and the reason you get a headrush when you smoke. Although nicotine is not carcinogenic (or that causes cancer), it is addicting.

Nicotine is addictive because it releases chemicals in your brain that make you feel good. Over time and as you smoke, your brain gets used to receiving these chemicals, and the brain starts to need nicotine daily to feel okay.

If you suddenly stop using nicotine, your brain will lack these chemicals that made it feel good, making you feel upset or angry.

The cravings are intense, which is why many people fail to stop smoking cold turkey. Many professionals recommend that you stop smoking using some form of therapy that will still deliver nicotine to your body in small doses.

Vaping Compared to Smoking

Vaping, compared to smoking, is much safer. In fact, in 95% much safer, according to Public Health England. This is because there is no combustion in vaping. While cigarettes contain more than 7000 dangerous chemicals that include carcinogens, vaping uses a liquid that only has four ingredients: artificial flavorings, vegetable glycerin, propylene glycol, and nicotine.

Vaping Compared to Other Methods of Quitting Cigarettes

Although there are few ways you can quit smoking, vaping is the best since quitting cold turkey and using traditional nicotine medicine have less than optimal results. For example, a Cochrane 2016 review found out that: "Almost half who try to quit without support will not manage to stop for even a week, and fewer than five percent remain abstinent at one year after quitting."

For those that will try to quit smoking using nicotine replacements like patches, gum, and lozenges, their likelihood of stopping smoking at all increases but not by very much. The same Cochrane report mentioned above states that "Behavioural support and medications such as nicotine patches or gum increase the chances of [successfully] quitting, but even with this additional support, long-term quit rates remain low."

So why is vaping better than nicotine gum or traditional vaping? Well, the key to vaping is that it addresses all of the shortcomings of other methods. With vaping, you get to keep the sensation of blowing smoke, of raising your hand to inhale, and you get to take in small doses of nicotine to help you curve your cravings. The Cochrane review mention above also goes on to say that:

"One of the limitations of current treatments is that none adequately address the sensory and behavioral aspects of smoking that smokers miss when they stop smoking (holding a cigarette, taking a puff, enjoyment of smoking). Electronic cigarettes may offer a way to overcome this limitation."

Now that the latest Cochrane review has found that "Nicotine e-cigarettes probably do help people to stop smoking for at least six months." "They probably work better than nicotine replacement therapy and nicotine‑free e-cigarettes." There is zero doubt that e-cigarettes are a great way to stop smoking.

How Does Vaping Help People Stop Smoking?

So vaping not only offers the “behavioral aspects” of smoking like taking a cigarette break, seeing the smoke (or vapor), inhaling the vapor, and much more, but it also offers something that cigarettes cannot provide. That is the ability to decrease the amount of nicotine that goes into your body.

You see, with vaping, the liquid that is evaporated called e-liquid (or vape juice or e-juice) can have the following strengths of nicotine: 18mg, 12mg, 6mg, 3mg, and 0mg. A vaper only has to pick their ideal nicotine strength, for example, 18mg, and from there slowly decrease the dosage of nicotine until they reach zero.

Tips on How Using Vapes to Quit Smoking

There are a couple of things you should consider when using vapes to quit smoking. First is finding the right level of nicotine to make sure you can transition properly into vaping.

For example, if you start with a low nicotine level, you will be turned off by vaping since it won’t fulfill your nicotine cravings. In contrast, if you start with a high nicotine level, you might experience some discomfort like a dry mouth and heavy coughs, causing you to go back to smoking. For starters, make sure you have the right amount of nicotine, and you’re vaping comfortably before beginning to decrease your nicotine dosage.

Another essential tip to keep in mind is that you refrain from vaping more when decreasing nicotine. Since the body will be looking to satisfy the same amount of nicotine, you might be tempted to vape more often, which is why you should try your hardest to prevent this as you’ll end up consuming more e-liquid.

Finally, you might also need to switch to a different type of e-liquid that allows you to go down to 0mg. Although most e-liquids have a 0mg version, not all e-liquids do, so when choosing an e-liquid, make sure that it has a 0mg version or other types of e-juices of the same flavor that go to 0mg.

Conclusion

Because vaping instead of smoking is healthier and has fewer chemicals, it makes up for an excellent cessation tool that still delivers nicotine. Also, because vaping is so similar to smoking cigarettes but less harmful, it could be the answer to quitting for many people who struggle with giving up cigarettes. If you struggle with quitting cigarettes and have tried using nicotine gum and patches, vaping might be the solution you’re looking for.
