The time will come for almost any vaper, when suddenly and out of nowhere, they will, without warning, taste charcoal and bitter smoke and immediately realize that something is wrong with the flavor of their vape juice. We call this a burnt coil, which usually occurs when the coil and wick are on their last legs. 

However, for some beginner vapers, burnt coils can be a recurring issue that occurs more often than they would like. Thankfully there are many ways in which vapers can address this issue and prevent their coils from burning frequently. In today’s blog, we go over some of the essential tips you can use to extend the lifespan of your coils and prevent the likelihood of burnt coils from occurring.

What is a Burnt Coil?

To understand how to prevent coils from burning, we must understand what exactly occurs that causes a burnt coil. A burnt coil most of the time will occur due to a dry wick or one that is not saturated enough with vape juice. 

This leads to two things: overcooked juice and burned wicks. Overcooked juice occurs when the leftover vape juice in the wick (after it is dried up) breaks down and causes a horrible burned taste. If the wick has no excess vape juice, it will burn, and since it is made out of cotton, this will create cotton fumes that also, as you guessed it, taste horrible. If either of these two things happens, you’ll have in your hands a burnt coil. 

Use a Vape Juice With High PG

One of the first things you can try to prevent vape coils from burning is to use vape juices that use a lot of propylene glycol or have a high propylene glycol ratio. Propylene glycol is one of the main ingredients in vape juices, and it is thinner than vegetable glycerin, which tends to be more viscous. So if you frequently run into issues with burn coils, the vape juice you are using could be the culprit. However, since most vape juices nowadays are 70VG/30PG, you might use vape juice with too much vegetable glycerin without knowing. 

To prevent vape coils from burning, you could switch to a high propylene glycol vape juice, which will give you more flavor and go easier on your coils. 

Remember to Prime Your Coils

A super important procedure that new vapers neglect to do and might sometimes forget is priming their coil. This procedure is necessary for the proper functioning of the coil, and if not performed correctly, it could ruin the coils even before you start using it. 

When replacing or using a coil for the first time, you must first saturate it with vape juice. To do this, you must drip e-liquid into the coil ports of the coil, which will be found on the sides of the coil. Then you’ll want to saturate the center of the coil by dripping vape juice right into the center. Next, you’ll want to ensure that the cotton is soaked or has been sufficiently dripped with vape juice by looking at the coil ports. The cotton should be wet to the touch. Next, attach your coil to the tank and fill your tank with vape liquid and let the vape juice saturate the coil even more by allowing the coil to rest, surrounded by vape juice, for at least 10 minutes.  

After that, to ensure the coil is even more saturated, you can inhale your vape device without using the firing button to make sure the vape juice is sucked into where the wicks are located. When performing this, go easy and only serve it a couple of times since you can potentially flood your coil. 

Now that you know how to prime a coil, remember to do this every time you replace or install a new coil. This will ensure the coil has a long lifespan and that it does not burn quickly or even stops working even before being used. 

Use Correct Vaping Technique 

Your vaping technique could be another issue that could be affecting the rate at which you burn coils. Inhaling too hard and too fast can affect the coil since it won't have enough time to draw vape juice from the tank. On the other hand, If you don't inhale hard enough, you won't get any vape juice, and the wick will not saturate. 

A mistake that beginners make, and one that we have talked abundantly about, is the correct vaping technique. Because new vapers most of the time are former smokers trying out a new form of nicotine, they are accustomed to inhaling hard and fast to inhale more smoke and or nicotine. But with vaping, the correct thing to do is inhale slowly and softly, which will give you more vapor and, in the end, prevent your coils from burning since they won't heat without evaporating vape juice. 

So, next time you're vaping, remember to take your time and don't inhale as hard, and this way, you'll make sure that you're vaping correctly, and you'll also be preventing your coil from burning. 

Don’t Chain Vape

Alongside the correct vaping technique, there is also the problem of chain vaping. Chain vaping, very much like chain-smoking, is vaping continuously for an extended period. This can lead to a burning coil since you need to allow time for the wicks to saturate once more with vape juice, and since vape juice is dense, this can take a while.

Vaping without stopping will dry your wicks and coil and will eventually burn it. To prevent your vape coil from burning, the answer is simple: don’t chain vape. Instead, allow for at least 10 minutes to pass by after each puff to make sure the coil and wicks have time to recover or saturate one more time. 

Keep your Tank Filled Up

This might be the most obvious of the tips in this blog, but worth mentioning. When trying to prevent your coils from burning, you have to make sure there is enough vape juice to saturate the vape coil. When the vape juice can barely reach the coil ports, it will take longer for the wicks to saturate, which means that you'll have to wait longer after each inhale. If the wicks dry out, you'll experience a horrible burnt vape taste, and you'll have a burnt coil in your hands.

To prevent this, you'll want to make sure that you are constantly topping off your vape juice tank and never let it get too low, as this can cause a burnt vape taste. You'll know you have to top off your tank if the flavor starts to get dim. If you don't have any vape juice on hand, you could always try to rotate the tank so that the wicks can saturate more quickly.

Reduce Power Settings

Another way to prevent burnt coils is to reduce your power settings. When you use a high wattage setting, you are burning through vape juice more quickly. But with plumes of vapor also comes the possibility of burning your wicks and coil. In addition, when using a higher wattage setting, you’ll be evaporating your vape juice faster and will risk hitting a dry wick which will create the taste of burnt coils. 

To fix this and prevent burnt coils, you can reduce the wattage setting. By decreasing the wattage setting, you won’t risk hitting a dry wick. Of course, you can also take small breaks between each draw, but it would be best to reduce the wattage to play it safe. 

Most of the time, coils come with a range of wattages inscribed on the coil. Using these ranges, and starting from the lower side of these ranges, will ensure that you don’t run into any problems.

Don’t Use E-liquids with Sweeteners

Another issue that pops up when talking about the causes of burnt coils is added sweeteners in e-liquids. These added sweeteners have the tendency to gunk up the coil (destroying them in the process) and can also gunk up the wick and can not soak up new vape juice, which causes overcooked and burned wicks, which, as we now know, is the cause of burnt coils. 

The primary sweetener that causes problems is sucralose, and you can tell if vape juice has sucralose by reading the list of ingredients in the back of the vape juice packaging or on the bottle itself. However, even if the e-liquids have no sucralose on the list of ingredients, they could be prone to gunking up the coils. 

Vape juices with dessert flavors and coffee-flavored e-liquids are common culprits that cause gunking problems. A good rule of thumb is that dark-colored vape juices are more likely to gunk your coils than vape juices with light or clear in color.
