What is Vape Juice Made of?
Vape juice is made up of four ingredients. Most vape juices contain nicotine (which is optional), artificial flavorings, vegetable glycerin, and propylene glycol. All of these ingredients contribute to the cloud production, taste, harshness, and even the flavor of the vape. And a little bit more or less of one or two ingredients can drastically impact the overall vaping experience. That’s why you need to learn about what each ingredient does and how each ingredient can shape the way you vape.
Types of Vape Juice
When it comes to traditional vape juice, almost all the vape juices have the same ingredients, and what creates different types of vape juice is the ratio or levels of each ingredient in the final vape juice bottle. Since vegetable glycerin and propylene glycol are the ingredients that can alter the vaping experience the most, we’ll talk about them first.
What are PG/VG levels in Vape Juice?
PG/VG levels in vape juice are simply the ratio of propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin that are found in the e juice composition. There are many different VG/PG ratios or PG/VG levels that are used in vaping. For example, you might see 70VG/30 PG, or 50PG/50VG, this just means that there is, for the first example, 70% vegetable glycerin and 30% propylene glycol in the vape juice composition, or for the second example that there is 50% propylene glycol and 50% vegetable glycerin.
PG vs. VG
Propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin both have unique characteristics that set them apart from each other, and they both contribute to the vaping experience differently. That’s why different PG/VG levels create different vaping experiences. But what does each component bring to the table?
Vegetable glycerin is a more viscous liquid than propylene glycol. Because of this, it creates a smoother throat hit or makes the vapor less harsh and easier to swallow. It also tends to be more sugary, which means that it’s perfect for sweet flavors and, in some instances, can make them taste a lot sweeter. Vegetable glycerin also gives thickness to the vapor, and more vegetable glycerin means more cloud production. However, because it’s more viscous, it does not carry flavor as well as propylene glycol.
Propylene glycol, on the other hand, is a thinner liquid. Because it’s thinner, it allows for the artificial flavorings to shine through, which means that often vape juices with more propylene glycol create a more flavorful vape juice. Propylene glycol also creates a harsher throat hit, so more PG means an experience more akin to smoking cigarettes.
This is why propylene glycol versus vegetable glycerin matters. Because depending on the ratio of each, you can have a very different vaping experience.
Vape Juice Nicotine Strength
Another ingredient that can impact the vaping experience, and for some people, the most essential ingredient is nicotine.
Unlike with cigarettes and cigars, when it comes to vaping, you can actually choose the amount of nicotine you wish to intake, and most vape juices come with various nicotine strengths or nicotine levels.
The most common nicotine strengths are 0mg, 3mg, and 6mg. However, it depends on the vape juice manufacturer, which can sometimes go as low as 1.5mg or as high as 12mg and 18mg of nicotine per milliliter. Various types of nicotine levels exist because vapers who wish to quit nicotine can do so gradually by starting at a high level and slowly lowering it until they reach 0mg.
Choose the Right Vape Juice
Choosing the right vape juice depends on the type of experience you want. And the four most important factors are the vegetable glycerin vs. propylene glycol ratios, the nicotine strength or level, and the type of device you’ll use with your vape juice, as well as the flavor.

Does Vape Juice Stain?
In some instances, vape juice can stain your clothes. Since both propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin are oily substances, they can leave a mark on your clothes, carpet, or threads. But you can easily clean it by treating it with dish detergent soap first (which breaks down oils) and then applying warm water. Then rubbing it until it vanishes should clean up any vape juice stains.
Is Vape Juice Oil?
Vape juice is not oil. However, propylene glycol is a petroleum by-product, and vegetable glycerin is made from vegetable oils. So while it does have two oil-based substances, it is not considered an oil.
