What Is a Vape Mod?

Because there is no vape dictionary that we can look at, there is no set term that the industry agrees on when talking about a vape mod. However, when taking the context into account, you can determine what vape mod means. The most common use, and what most people refer to when talking about a vape mod, is the part of a box mod that houses the battery and has the LED screen, the chipset, and all the electronics.

The term “mod” was created by the first vapers who experimented and “modified” the battery and battery cases to create devices that generated large amounts of vapor. The term stuck, and now powerful, high-wattage devices that use traditional vape juices are called box mods. And even though most people understand that when we refer to “vape mods” we are talking about the part of the box mod that houses the battery, “vape mods” can also refer to the vape devices that use mods. These can refer to mechanical mods, pod mods, squonk mods, and even vape pens.

Types of Vape Mods

There are many types of vape mods, but the main ones are mechanical mods, pod mods, and box mods.

Mechanical Mods: Mech mods are box mods that don’t use a chipset or have a circuit board, which means they don’t come with safety features that regulate the current. Instead, they are powered by 18650 batteries that provide raw current to the atomizer. These vape mods are only for experienced vapers.

Pod Mods: Pod mods mix pod systems and box mods, creating small and easy-to-use devices that have digital menus and chipsets that allow the user to change the wattage. They are like box mods but smaller.

Box mods: Usually, when we refer to box mods, we are talking about sub-ohm devices that are regulated, have chipsets that allow the user to change wattages, and usually come with detachable tanks that are attached to powerful vape mods.

Who Are Vape Mods Made For?

Vape mods are meant to be used by experienced vapers who want to create lots of clouds. Most vape mods are used in unison with sub-ohm tanks and reach very high wattages and require a bit of upkeep. That’s why box mods are recommended for experienced vapers. However, if you are a relatively new vaper that wants to try out a box mod that uses a vape mod, by all means, give it a try. Just expect a learning curve and that you will spend more money upfront than  when buying a disposable.

IMPORTANT: Unregulated box mods that have no chipset or circuitry that regulates the electric current or have safety features are inherently more dangerous than devices that do have chipset and circuit boards. If this is your first time buying a box mod, make sure it is regulated,  has a chipset, and comes with safety features.

How To Buy a Vape Mod

If you are planning on buying a vape mod to use it to vape, you’ll also need:

  • A vape tank
  • Vape juice
  • Batteries
  • Coils

Since buying all these things separately can be expensive, we recommend buying a starter kit or a box mod kit includes the vape mod, the vape tank, and the coils. So all you need to buy is the vape juice since most vape mods nowadays (especially those for beginners) use integrated batteries that come inside the vape mod.

How To Use a Vape Mod

Once you buy your starter kit, using a vape mod is easy. Although the directions can vary depending on the model and brand, they usually work as follows:

  • First, charge your vape mod.
  • Next, once it is charged, prepare the tank.
  • Take out the coil head from the tank and take note of the recommended wattages the manufacturer of the coil recommends in order to vape it; make sure to write this down somewhere.
  • Next, prime the coil head with the vape juice you plan on vaping.
  • Put the coil back into the tank and attach it to your vape mod.
  • Fill the tank with vape juice to the limit specified on the tank (in most tanks, there is a fill line marked in the glass).
  • Allow the coil to become fully saturated with vape juice, so leave the device standing upward for about 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Next, turn on your device, and from the LED menu, choose the lowest recommended wattage written in the coil.
  • Change the wattage depending on your liking, making sure to stay in the recommended wattages written by the manufacturer.

There is more that can be covered regarding vape mods, but we hope this serves as an important introduction to the world of vape mods. Remember that buying a starter kit is way more affordable than buying a vape mod by itself. And if you are a newbie to vaping, buy a regulated vape mod since unregulated vape mods require more experience and knowledge and don’t come with safety features.
