Andres Roman |

If you are new to vaping you might have come across the terms “vape mod” or  “box mod.”  While it might sound strange to newbies, the box mod is fairly common, and while it might not be as common as it was before, it may still be beneficial for you to be in on the basics. After you get through this short guide, you’ll be set to purchase your first vape mod, or at the very least, you’ll be able to drop some knowledge the next time somebody asks what a vape mod is.

What Is a Vape Mod?

Overall, the vape industry is so new that many of the terms out there get thrown into the same pool most of the time. Still, the term ‘vape mod’ is most commonly used to describe the part of a box mod that houses the battery and has the LED screen, the chipset, and all the electronics in the device.

The term “mod” was created by the early adopters who experimented and “modified” the battery and battery cases to create devices that generated larger clouds of vapor. Thanks to these vaping madmen and pioneers, the term stuck, and now powerful, high-wattage devices that use traditional vape juices are called box mods. Even though most people use the term to describe the part of the device that houses the battery, it can also be used to refer to the vape device itself. Including different types of units like mechanical mods, pod mods, squonk mods, or vape pens.

Types of Vape Mods

There are many types of vape mods, but the main ones you will find online and at your local neighborhood vape shop are mechanical mods, pod mods, and box mods.

Mechanical Mods: Mech mods are box mods that don’t use a chipset or have a circuit board, which means they don’t come with safety features that regulate current. Instead, they are powered by 18650 batteries that provide raw current to the atomizer. These are aimed at experienced vapers because the type of batteries they use require more care than others.

Pod Mods: Pod mods mix pod systems and box mods, creating small and easy-to-use devices that have digital menus and chipsets that allow the user to change the wattage. They are like box mods but smaller in size, yet, they still pack quite the punch.

Box mods: Usually, when we refer to box mods, we are talking about sub-ohm devices that are regulated, have chipsets that allow the user to change wattages, and usually come with detachable tanks that are attached to powerful vape mods. They may or may not use integrated batteries or single or double 18650 batteries. These are what most vapers think of when they talk about vape mods.

IMPORTANT: Vape mods may sometimes use separate 18650 batteries. This type of battery requires special attention and care. While you don’t need to be an electrician to use them, we did write a great blog on battery safety that we recommend you check out if you’re thinking of buying a box mod with 18650 batteries.

Who Are Vape Mods Made For?

Vape mods are for everyone. But particularly for vapers that want to block out the sun with vapor clouds, those that have a true passion for vaping and want to become hobbyists, and those that don’t mind a bit of upkeep. That’s why box mods are recommended for vapers that already know their way around a vape device. However, if you are a relatively new vaper that wants to try out a vape mod, by all means, give it a go. Just expect a learning curve. Like learning how to play a new video game, the more you use it, the better you’ll get at it.

IMPORTANT: Unregulated box mods that have no chipset or circuitry that regulates the electric current, or have safety features are inherently more dangerous than devices that do have chipset and circuit boards. While we would love to make a joke here, in truth, the punchline would be your safety. So if this is your first time, play it safe, and get a regulated vape mod device. Which is exactly what you’ll find in our vape mod product list.

What Are The Best Vape Mods?

Like picking a favorite son or daughter, it’s impossible to pick the best vape mod. We like to think of vape devices as siblings that excel in different areas, not one being particularly “better” than the other, just different. For example, if you want vaping mods for beginners, you might want something simple with not too many features. If you want the best vape mod for clouds, you might consider something with high wattage. And if you have the bread, and want the most expensive vape mod money can buy you might want to look into the SMOK Fortis 80W. Just remember to spread the love equally.

How To Buy a Vape Mod

If you’re planning on getting a vape mod, you’ll also need:

  • A vape tank
  • Vape juice
  • Batteries
  • Coils

Since buying all these things separately can be expensive, we recommend buying a starter kit or a box mod kit that includes the vape mod, the vape tank, and the coils. So all of the additional shopping you would need to do is limited to vape juice. Check out some killer vape juice options here

How To Use a Vape Mod

It may seem obvious, but the first step should always be reading the manual the device comes with, which will tell you exactly how the device works. Alternatively, looking online at YouTube reviews might also help. Nevertheless, we’ve done our best effort to give you a standard guide to follow. Just bear in mind that the information below is only an approximation of how most vape mods work and direction may vary depending on the model and brand you get.

  • Charge your vape mod.
  • Prepare the tank.
  • Take out the coil head from the tank and take note of the recommended wattages the manufacturer of the coil recommends.
  • Prime the coil head with the vape juice you plan on vaping.
  • Put the coil back into the tank and attach it to your vape mod.
  • Fill the tank with vape juice to the limit specified on the tank (You’ll usually find a fill line marked on the tank glass).
  • Allow the coil to become fully saturated with vape juice by leaving the device standing upward for about 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Turn your device on and choose the lowest recommended wattage on the LED screen.
  • Change the wattage depending on your preference and stay within the manufacturer’s recommendations.

Conclusion

More can be covered regarding vape mods, but this should be a good starting point. Remember that buying a starter kit is way more affordable than buying a vape mod by itself if you don’t already have a variety of parts and accessories. If you’re a newbie to vaping, make sure to buy a regulated vape mod since unregulated devices require more experience and knowledge.
